When the show came on air, comedy was much softer and less self-referential. When the show started the writers were guys in their early thirties who saw themselves and Bart and their fathers as Homer.

The whole process of making an episode takes 10 months, and, as you've got 22 episodes in a season, you've got this going on simultaneously.
