The Textile Giants

Textile designers are a very important group of people in the fashion industry. There is usually more of a focus on fashion designers who concentrate on the cut and silhouette of a garment, but textile designers are the people who create the fabric that garments are made out of. A square piece of silk can be beautiful as is, but once it is covered with an exotic or ornamental design, or some form of intricate physical change to its shape, then that square piece of silk becomes wearable art that is appealing to the eye.

to wear in ancient Greece. This dress was so different from the corseted style of the early 1900’s, that Fortuny patented his design. The secret of this intricate form of pleating supposedly died when Fortuny did, so his technique has never been exactly redone the way he perfected it, but many people have imitated his type of pleating to create clothing with the same visual affect as the original Fortuny techniques. Fortuny was not only famous for his Delphos gown, but also for his expertise in other textile products such as printing on velvets and other fabrics. Since he focused on the fabric and not the silhouette of his garments, his pieces are considered timeless and classic. He regarded his work as art, not fashion, and this has given Fortuny designs a classic appeal, unlike clothing that is only trendy and doesn’t last long in the fashion spotlight.
