The Tragedy of Julius Caesar: Tragic Hero

The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is one of William Shakespeare’s most well-known plays, and although the title implies Julius Caesar himself is the main character, the story is actually centered primarily around Marcus Brutus’s struggle with himself and descent into allowing himself to be manipulated. By looking at his several character flaws, high position in the story, and tragic death, one can see that he is truly the play’s tragic hero.
While Brutus is not in as significant of a position as Caesar’s, his major role in the story itself is what gives him the potential to be the tragic hero that he is. He has more dialogue than any other character and has the most influence, although ...

He is too trustful and does not realize what people are capable of doing to him after gaining his trust. When the face letters are sent to him from the conspirators, Brutus believes these letters are from the people of Rome and agrees to the death of Caesar. Another example of this naivety is in Act 3, Scene 2, wherein Brutus decides to allow Antony to speak to show honor to Caesar. In the end, this decision ruins him. Antony riles the crowd into believing that the conspirators are all evil and they must get revenge. As a result, a war breaks out.
Finally, his death is the perfect example of tragedy. Brutus dies in the end at his own free will because he felt unbearable remorse for Caesar's death, and his final words told that. His character flaws contributed in the chain of events leading to his death.
