The character Richard, in the Shakespearean play The Tragedy of King Richard III, progressively isolates himself as he separates from the other characters and breaks the bond between man and God through his efforts to gain power. As he hates "the idle pleasures of these days" (I, i, 31) and speaks of his plots to set one brother against another, Richard becomes socially apart from the figures around him, and he is regarded as an outsider because of his deformity. Although the isolation of Richard is the real tragedy in the play, Richard is not really seen to be a tragic figure of great proportions. The concept of Richard's physical isolation is reinforced in his dealings with Anne. She calls him "thou lump of foul deformity" and "fouler toad" during their exchange. Despite these insults, however, she still makes time to talk to Richard, and by the end of their exchange, she has taken his ring. Physical isolation in Richard's deformity wins sympathy from the audience as he is offered pity in his condition. Richard uses his deformity as a tool against the other characters, to portray them as victimizing Richard. Thus, the sense of tragedy is lessened by his own actions, although his isolation becomes greater as the play progresses.
Richard's spiritual isolation is conveyed through his lack of conscience in his murderous acts. Richard isolates himself from God, as he claims to be above God's law and only uses religion as a tool to appear Holy person ...
