The Truths of Human Genetic Editing

Human Genetic Editing - the controversial discovery that has got scientists all over the world debating about, yet, it’s only been tested on a small group of monkeys (Mullin). Human genetic editing is the act in which scientists inject bone marrow modified by an unregulated and fairly new/expensive technology called CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats). The modified bone marrow can cure a variety of previously incurable diseases such as HIV and various heart diseases that scientists have worked decades to develop cures for. Scientists take individual bases of DNA and replace them with CRISPR modified ones. Because of the fact that these bases are microscopic, there is a high chance that something could go seriously wrong due to the size. An example of this is shown in an article in the Washington Post. It states that, “The most recent work is particularly sensitive because it involves changes to the germline — that is, genes that could be passed onto future generations” (Cha). This means that if a base (part) in a patient’s DNA gets messed up, then that small part could potentially get passed onto future generations, which can lead to several different types of mutations and complications occurring. Just because of that one mess up. Furthermore, reproductive endocrinologist Paula Amato at first was excited to try out CRISPR in order to edit out a disease in one of her patient's embryos. However, things didn't go as planned during the process as stated in an article by the Washington Post, ...

in many important historical events. One example could be in 1765 when England ruled over the 13 colonies. They imposed a new tax called the Stamp Act where colonists had to pay a tax for every piece of paper that they purchased. This event led to huge protests and tax collectors almost being killed, as a result of the colonists not being represented at all in Parliament when the tax was being made. Just like back then, the beliefs of citizens in the U.S. are not being represented now when it comes to Genetic Editing and laws are not being made. Looking back at history, there is an extensive possibility that if 59% isn’t acknowledged, havoc will occur. If we’ve seen this happen ...
