The governess only shares her own thoughts and feelings which creates ambiguity in the passage. Depending on how the reader as an individual interprets the passage, the governess can be seen as both the protagonist and antagonist. On one side, the reader sees that the governess is trying to protect Miles from the ghost of Quint, but because the point of view of the narrative is biased, it leaves room for the reader to question if what the governess is trying to protect the children from even exists. Mrs. Grosse states, “It was Quint’s own fancy. To play with him [Miles], I mean – to spoil him” and that he was too free with people.
