'The Twelfth Night' is one of those comedies of William Shakespeare that revolves around the theme of 'excess'. Excess thus refers to a certain imbalance in the plot which is highlighted though various means including actions, words and emotions. In Twelfth Night, excess has been used intentionally in order to both generate spontaneous laughter and expose the imperfections of English society. Thus we can say that Shakespeare normally uses this dramatic tool to accentuate a particular emotion. Love is one area, which occupies central place in most comedies, but in Twelfth Night, the element of love has been used in conjunction with excess in order to give a different meaning to the whole plot. Let us make it more clear, love has been incorporated not so that its beauty could have been exploited, but so that the playwright could mock the emotions of lovers who waste little time in moving on after proclaiming undying love for their previous beloved. The element of excess has been intentionally placed in speeches of lovers in order to prove that emotions are not always as deep as they appear to be.

"O, when mine eyes did see Olivia first,

And my desires, like fell and cruel hounds,
