of the horizon. However, tipping backwards into the ocean all scubaed up, a new world opens up. It's a world that may be breathtakingly beautiful or cruel and unfair, but it is a new world that helps define and expound upon the world above the surface. By taking this backwards tip, we discover relationships between this new world and the familiar world we just left. We learn not only of the characters, but of the author as well. This new world helps us see why the other world is the way it is.

Freud suggests that things not normal and customary to us surprise us and often create a feeling of uncanniness.

James employs this technique throughout The Turn of the Screw. I will examine several instances of this technique.
