Being held captive by Heathens, the Indians or the Catholic French, and being forced to live with them itself was a form of hell and one could be redeemed only if they escaped or were freed so they could return to their Puritanical ways. Eunice William's decision to remain with the Indians, adopt their way of life and marry an Indian instead of "redeeming" herself like the rest of the family was an "appalling aspect" and one that brought great sorrow to her father who was a Minister in the Puritan Church.
