This trial version was not the same animal as it previously had been. It had several modifications: the referee will directly review the play in question using an on-the-field monitor (under the former system an official in the press box had the last word); the time allotted for reviewing a play will be limited to two minutes (that eliminated annoying long breaks that only served to confirm the first decision); also there were only three types of plays that could be reviewed. The revisable plays were: plays in the end-zone to determine whether a player actually had possession of the ball in the end-zone, and without stepping out of bounds before catching it; reviewing plays on the sidelines to determine whether a player recovers a fumble there or makes a reception and comes down in-bounds; and to count the number of players on the field.
