The West Indies

Alan Taylor in his book American Colonies talks about how the West Indies became the crown jewels of the English colonial empire. In 1686, West Indies produced more than all North American colonies. As Alan Taylor mentions, Tobacco was valuable to the empire but sugar was more profitable than anything else around that time. Sugar could bear all the costs because it was in great demand by Europeans. The profits of sugar drew English colonists to West Indies. The production of sugar in West Indies brought a lot of changes and is considered one of the main reasons of slavery.
