Joyce Carol Oates appears to be a very innocent woman. Her small face surrounded by large glasses and thinning soft brown curls adds to her frailty. This outside appearance, however, fools most people who have not read anything by her. Her writings, in fact, are the opposite of innocent and lead many people to ask the question; how can this delicate face bear such a dark and brutal imagination?
Most of the works written by Joyce Carol Oates takes places during very traumatic and turmoiled times. Oates writes stories concerning common American obsessions such as love, money, and evil. She portrays men as either very brutal or very weak, while the women in her stories are usually victims. If not a victim of assault or rape, the women find themselves searching for the comfort of a man. Oates views life as a never ending struggle which leads her to convey similar themes to her readers. Her 26 novels, short stories, plays, essays, and poems deliver nothing but the harsh realities of the world. Each one of her works have separate themes within themselves which may make it hard to pin down one common theme, but Oates tries to create characters who have qualities that readers can see in themselves. This is what makes Oates’ writings so desirable to many people.
