Theme And Summary Of The Color Purple

The theme of Alice Walker’s novel The Color Purple isn’t hard to figure out. This novel is devoted to bring into light the mistreatment of blacks, espically black women. The book seemed to also focus on sexual issues such as incest and sexual abuse.
A lot of the story of the novel was based on the personal expieriences of Alice Walker, growing up in the south as an uneducated and abused child. This novel like many other of Alices works was intended to inspire black woman to stand up for their rights. Celie, the main character of the book, goes through a sort of transformation, from a submissive, abused wife to a confident and independent black buisnesswoman.

At the age of fourteen she is raped by her father who tells her that “…she better shut-up and git used to it.” She gets married to a amn that she does not love to escape the violence in her father’s house. This proved to only make things worse when it becmae appearent that her husband also was an abusive man. Th emarrige seems to be only benifiting Mr.____ (her husband is never named), as she takes care of the kids and his house. She gets so fed up with feeling that she is worth nothing that she starts to indentify with a tree, which shows no emotion. The tree also though is symbolic of constant growth and change, and Celie always striving to become bigger and stronger.
