Themes in the Grapes of Wrath

“The Grapes of Wrath” is a novel written by John Steinbeck in 1939. The setting of “The Grapes of Wrath” was during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl Crisis. The novel focuses on a poor family of sharecroppers called the Joads. The Joads were forced to leave their home in Oklahoma because of drought and economical challenges. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, the Joads set out for California as they find flyers advertising the abundance of work. In this novel, Steinbeck used themes such as ‘People versus Nature’, ‘Endurance in Times of Great Tribulation’, and ‘People’s Reliance on Family and their Community’.

It had such a major impact of society in mid-America that the entire first chapter of the Grapes of Wrath was dedicated to descriptions of the dust bowl and how it affected the people and land of Oklahoma. “Every moving thing lifted the dust as high as the fence tops” (The Grapes of Wrath, Chapter 1), Crops were destroyed; bacterial components in the dust could affect the people’s health. Breathing, eating, playing outside, simple aspects of life were changed, the way people lived were changed as well. “Men and women huddled in their houses, and they tied handkerchiefs over their noses when they went out, and wore goggle to protect their eyes.”(The Grapes of Wrath, Chapter 1) The Joads were farmers in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl Crisis. Their crops had been destroyed, and the owners of the land realized that there sharecropping wasn’t making a profit anymore.
