Thomas Hart Benton was born in Missouri into a political family. He went to the Chicago Art Institute and studied painting techniques. He then went to Paris for three years. Benton painted with realism and is known as a Regionalist painter. His works are still shown today.
Every painter is influenced by something. Benton’s paintings were influenced by America and its history. In 1929, he created several murals and titled them America Today. Many people related to his work because he often painted common people, such as farmers or construction workers. He was influenced by the country around him.

Benton lived in a time of housewives and farmers; of simpler things. The United States then was not as diverse as the United States we know today.
Benton’s artwork is shown in many places across our country. His paintings are considered to be American classics. His artwork can be found in many museums along with other large public places. His artwork is displayed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and in the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas just to name a few places.
