Robin Sharma, a famous writer, once wrote, “Words can inspire. And words can destroy.” This has proven to be true repeatedly throughout history. Going back all the way to ancient Greece, it was a speech delivered by Demosthenes which inspired the Athenian people to unite, rise up and retaliate against King Philip. Yet, it was a speech which gave rose to the greatest villain in World War II — Adolf Hitler. The power of speeches can truly be impactful and devastating. However, what exactly makes a speech persuasive? Civil Rights Marchin 1963, in which he calls for American civil rights and end of racism. Lastly is President Obama’s campaign speech delivered in 2008, in which he explained some of the problems he believed were the core issues in America such as poverty, terrorism and the war in Iraq. He promised some of the changes he would bring upon America if he was to be elected. Ranking the quantitive and qualitative persuasiveness of King, Smathers and Obama’s speeches can be done effectively using the PERSUADE acronym.
