‘To Be Or Not To Be’


One of the most notable passages in the world is the soliloquy in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The passage is, besides an important climax in the underlying plot and theme of the play, perhaps the most revealing moment of Hamlet’s inner character. It is the first moment in which Hamlet is able to meditate upon his problems, after a series of tribulations have been thrown his way. After the death of the King and the swift marriage of Gertrude and Claudius, Hamlet is confronted by the ghost of his father. ‘ to be or not to be…’ and ends with the second repetition of ‘To die-to sleep.’ In this section Hamlet concentrate’s on the two courses of action he can take; to live or to die. The theme within this part is centered on the ‘question.’ The second part begins with ‘To sleep’ and concludes with the question ‘Than fly to others…’ Here, the question about the after life arises and Hamlet again discusses the hardships of life but this time uses numerous examples; ‘the whips and scorns of time’, ‘pangs of despised love’, ‘law’s delay’, ‘insolence of office’, and ‘the spurns that patient merit of the unworthy takes.’ In this section Hamlet’s language changes from personal (I, me) to generalizations. Rather than stating the struggles that he faces he expands his thinking on matters that humanity in general endeavor such as aging, the pains of not being loved in return, and good guys always suffer. Hamlet then debates whether it is better to take a risk and die into the unknown‘ fly to others that we know not of’ or ‘to grunt and sweat under a weary life’ deal with the pain life brings us. Towards the end of the soliloquy Hamlet reaches his ultimate answer; ‘Thus conscience does make cowards of us all.’ Hamlet says that cowards that choose to die make us choose to live.
