In “” by Andrew Marvell, the speaker tells of how fleeting life is and tries to persuade his mistress to consummate their love. Even though Marvell divides this poem into three logical sections, the diction could be more passionate and romantic. His focus should be less on death and more on their relationship.
In the beginning of the poem gentle lines and imagery are used. “We would sit down, and think which way to walk and pass our long love’s day.” What this line brings to mind is of a couple in love sitting down together planning how they will spend the day. The point he is trying to make here is that why should she wait to have sex. That she should give it up to him since saving it could end up a waste.
At the end of the poem he tries to reason with her. Being still alive and young, the speaker is saying that they should put all their feeling and love together, to strengthen what they have between them and take her virginity, because times does not stand still and they can eat up time making love. “ Let us roll all our strength, and all our sweetness, up into one ball; and tear our pleasures with rough strife thorough the iron gates of life. Thus, though cannot make our sun stand still, yet we will make him run.”
Did the speaker make love to the mistress? Probably not because he doesn’t believe in the truth of what he is saying, but using various strategies in an attempt to win her over.
