To Kill A Mockingbird: Compassion

Compassion isn’t something shown by people everyday, but in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, compassion is one of the themes. Scout is the main character and the narrator in the story, she is the youngest child of lawyer Aticus Finch. Scout thought of their neighbor, Boo Radley, as a monster, describing him as “six and a half feet tall with bloodstained hands who often ate squirrels and cats he could catch.” (Lee 12) When they first become friends with another kid in the neighborhood, Dill, he gives them the idea to get Boo Radley to come out of his home. After many failed attempts they give up finally leaving Boo alone.

that they had been sewed up and placed carefully back on the fence. But the first time Scout ever showed compassion towards Boo is after he saves her and Jem from Bob Elwell. On that night Scout starts to see Boo as a person and not just their creepy neighbor. Scout says afterwards “neighbors bring food in death, lowers in sickness and little things in between. Boo was our neighbor, he gave us soap dolls, a broken watch and chain, a pair of good luck pennies and our lives. But neighbors give in return. We never put back into the tree what we took out of it. We had given him nothing and that makes me sad” (Lee). This shows how much she cares for Boo.

Scout learns to show compassion from her father, Aticus. He shows compassion towards all people no matter their age, gender or race. Atticus takes Tom Robinson's case even though he and everyone else in Maycomb knows that he is going to lose. Atticus shows compassion towards Jem and Scout thought out the novel.
