Toni Morrison is one of America's most acclaimed and recognized writer of the twentieth century. The recent interview that I had the opportunity to view featured Toni Morrison and focused on her prize winning book, Beloved. At the beginning of her interview, she discussed how her novel was based upon the true story of a slave named Margaret Garner. Garner tried to shield her children from the horrors of slavery by attempting to kill them. Garner hit her two boys with a shovel, cut her little girl's throat, and slammed another one against a wall. Just like Morrison's character, Sethe, she succeeded in killing one of her four children. was based on a true story, I soon began to sympathize with Morrison's point of view. Margaret Garner was a mother in a desperate situation. Although extreme, her actions were only a reflection of the society that she had been raised in. She was trying to protect her children from the harsh reality of slavery and all that she had endured.
Throughout the interview she stated how difficult is was for her to write a book solely based on slavery since it frightened her so much. Since it is such a disturbing topic to deal with Morrison decided that she would write a book that included the conditions of slavery but put the greater emphasis on the minds of those who lived with slavery. She wanted to focus on the feelings and emotions that besieged her characters during and after slavery. Morrison also used a house, 124 Bluestone Road, as the center of her novel. She used baby Sugg's home as the center of the novel, since it symbolizes family life and the family structure. ...
