At the turn of 1967, entrepreneur Joseph Coulombe started an innovative private chain of convenience stores called "Trader Joe's". The chain first started in 1958 as a brand called "Pronto Markets", it was very similar to 7-Eleven. The brand "Pronto Markets" was originally owned by a company called Rexall and in 1958, Coulombe was asked to test launch the brand store to compete against 7-Eleven.
