Tragic Heroes

The story Antigone by Sophocles follows a woman named Antigone, the daughter of a fallen King, who is willing to stand up for her dead brother, Polyneices, regardless of law. In the play we see Creon, Antigone's uncle, putting laws in place that she breaks. The story is exceedingly dramatic and irony is often seen throughout the play. Some might say that Antigone is the protagonist, but in reality the true tragic hero is Creon.

"I have proclaimed to Thebes that none Shall give him funeral honours or lament him But leave him there unburied, to be devoured" (202 - 204). When the King articulates this, one can see an arrogant side start to show. More often than not, power leads to downfall. Creon is oblivious as to how he is shameing himself.

Furthermore, we see in the play that Creon has a son, Haemon, who is now engaged to Antigone. The problem is Creon, after finding out of Antigone's doing, does not want them to wed. Creon states to Ismene "I hate a son to have an evil wife" (Line 571). Creon then argues with Haemon, stating that he cannot possibly be wrathful because of Antigone's soon death. He tells him that Loyalty to him is greater, "And let her find her husband in hell!" (Line 653) if he chooses otherwise.
