Treasure Island: Teamwork Overcomes Greed



In the novel Treasure Island a quest for treasure becomes a fight for survival. Jim Hawkins, the main character in the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, has a defined position in the story and the events that take place are recounted in his point of view. In a way, the boy Jim is “stuck” in the middle of all the chaos that is occurring around him. Jim, along with the reader, is introduced to characters with extremely different personalities and opinions such as Dr. Livesey, Long John Silver, Squire Trewlawny, and Captain Smollet. they need each other to survive and they have to get along and cooperate if they want to live. This shows the high maturity level of both these characters. Although most like to think age shows maturity level, the pirates are perfect examples of grown men who have not learned enough to live a life based on good morals and values.
Secondly, Jim Hawkins played an important part in the novel. Throughout the story, Jim learns from his mistakes and develops a more defined character. When Jim heard about the pirates’ plan to kill them, he was honest and immediately told the Squire of what he had learned. But even though he tried to do what he thought was best, Jim ended up making a few mistakes. For example, Jim left his fellow shipmates including the Squire and the Captain when they might have needed him most, for the Captain was ill.
