He was often brought on his mother’s dates and one time had to watch his mother being strangled until he broke it up by screaming hysterically (Kehoe). He then moved in with relatives in Monroeville, Alabama (Fournier). He was always writing and he loved it. He won his first prize at age ten for his story “Old Ms.Busybody,” where he took second place in a newspaper competition (Fournier).
