Under the Numbers
It was 1929. I lived in a large apartment in Munich, so big to fit me, my mama, papa, sister, and six brothers. We had a close relationship with the Catholic family who lived in the only other apartment on our floor. The Müllers were a nice couple who did not care that we were Jews. We had dinners together, went to the park, and shared hot cocoa on cold nights. But this relationship soon came to an end in 1940, after the years of persecution against Jews finally convinced them we were the animals they said we were.
