The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze three writers and their works: Arthur Miller, Edith Wharton, and Langston Hughes. Specifically, it will describe and analyze the way these writers use symbolism in their works to create deeper levels of meaning. Symbolism is one of the most important elements in most fiction, and these three writers illustrate its' importance by the many ways they utilize it in their writing.

56). The symbolism in his works helps continue this theme of struggle against bigotry, as his poem, "Harlem: A Dream Deferred," illustrates. In it, Hughes speaks out concerning the dreams of blacks that are put on hold, and uses vivid imagery and symbolism to ask difficult questions. "What happens to a dream deferred? / Does it dry up / like a raisin in the sun? / Or fester like a sore- / And then run? / Does it stink like rotten meat?" (Hughes and Dickinson 40). The symbolism here is clear, blacks are indeed like "raisins in the sun," and their dreams "dry up" and "fester." This is symbolism at its best, and Hughes, and the other writers, know how to use it to make a vivid and memorable impact on the reader. This symbolism was so strong it even turned into a play about black Americans entitled "A Raisin in the Sun."
