Various Forms of Betrayal in 1984

The novel 1984, written by George Orwell, gives a continuous theme of betrayal from all aspects and perspectives from the characters. The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, receives betrayal in multiple ways. His experiences include betrayal from his idea of a mentor O’Brien, his love figure Julia, and his most impactful betrayer, himself. Orwell explores various kinds of betrayal, including self-betrayal, to heighten the mood of loneliness and alienation in 1984.
