Violence In Persepolis

One common theme in Persepolis, a graphic novel written by Marjane Satrapi, is the effect of violence on children living during the Iranian Revolution. Throughout the story, events take place in which violence is used to contain expressions of anarchy towards government by method of peaceful protest. These events of violence have a great influence on the lives and minds of the children who are growing up during this time of disorganization. There are two specific examples in Persepolis that display how violence sways the actions and thoughts of the younger generations.

A child’s life at a young age is considered innocent because of their little experience with the reality of the world, but when the innocent connotation with something such as an iron is tampered with, confusion is poured into a child’s brain like molasses. Confusion is a theme that overlaps with the violence in the book, and is displayed through these examples.

A second example again shows how the torture of prisoners can ooze into one’s mind during daily life. After hearing about the tortures that are occurring in their prisons, Marji decides to accommodate her new knowledge and use these tortures as punishment for those who loose the game being played. Though less intense while being applied to by children, the looser has to withstand pain and disgust, just as prisoners do. Marji declares that she feels powerful when applying the tortures, but then breaks down from feeling suddenly overwhelmed. This reaction displays the negative affect the violence is ...
