Vision in Carver's Stories

In his short stories, we can't help noticing that Carver is also concerned with the collapse of human relationships. Some of his stories take place at the moment when things fall apart and others, after the damage has already been done. In this part, we're going to pay a particular attention to his vision of identity through the use of his various characters.

At a surface reading level, the lack of details about the characters can be criticized because we are only given the little that the characters say, not their inner thoughts and feelings. But in order to create honest descriptions of working-class characters, Carver says little but implies much.

all of Carver's characters share the same characteristic : their lack of physical and psychological definition, which raises the question of identity.

In the introduction of his characters, Carver only provides the person's name and his or her occupation. The characters' occupations simplify them .We could compare his way of defining the characters as an iceberg: readers can only see the tip of the iceberg floating above the water, and they have to imagine what is hidden. (if there is actually something hidden)

For instance, the narrator of ``Neighbors >> does not give the characters' opinions, but simply states their actions in an unbiased way. He does not used complicated words to tell the story and the tone is quite impersonal. The characters of this story live in envy of their neighbors : (<< Well, I wish it was us >> Bill says) The most important concept about this story is that very often, people are bored with what they have and desperately want what they don't ...
