Wallace Stevens


was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on October 2, 1879; the son of Garret Stevens and Margaretha Zeller. He was the second of five children and outlived all of them. He had two brothers and two sisters who were all very close. Wallace attended Reading Boys' School where his brothers also attended. The competition between the brothers concerning academics was extremely intense. Wallace being the shy, quiet type, was often overlooked and was struggling for attention. As a young boy, Wallace was inquisitive, creative, brilliant, and solitary; and all of these qualities stayed with him as he grew older. He loved football and reading: his favorites were, Edgar Allen Poe, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. ...

1897. There, he wrote for the Harvard Advocate under the peudonym's, including John Fiske and Carrol Moore. The recurring name of John is said to be part of Wallace's jealousy toward his older brother. At Harvard, Wallace also joined the Signet Society, and was soon after elected secretary. It was here where he met his good friend George Santayana.
After finishing school at Harvard, Wallace moved to New York and began writing for the New York Tribune. But in 1901 he abandoned journalism and went to New York Law School in 1902. It was here that he developed a professional relationship with W.C. Peckham.
After returning to Reading in 1904, he met Elsie Kachel Moll. He had said that he would marry the most beautiful woman in Reading, and he was sure that she was the one. The years from 1904-1908, Wallace spent most of his time thinking about Elsie, but thought it was important that he find himself in his work, so they remained far away.
