Magical realism is a type of story that seems realistic but the author brings in some fantasy. In Laura Esquivel’s For Water Like Chocolate and Gabriel Marquez’ The Handsomest Drowned Man magical realism plays a huge role. They both have very realistic plots, but there is a twist of illusion in the story.
The Handsomest Drowned Man uses many examples of magical realism. The man found drowned was described as being enormous. “The tallest men’s holiday pants would not fit him, nor the fattest one’s Sundays’ shirt, nor the shoes of the one with biggest feet.”(6pgh.). On the eve of his wedding night to Tita’s sister, Tita bakes the cake and tears fall into the batter. At the reception the next day, all those who eat the cake breakout into tears of sadness as a reflection of Tita’s jealousy, sadness, and bitterness.
Magical realism is a wonderful way of letting the reader expand his or her imagination beyond fact. It brings reverie to a serious tale.
