The mistrust that most Americans feel towards the U.S. government officials and political patties of today can be traced back to the Watergate scandal of 1972, which finally led to the resignation of an American president. The Watergate scandal included crimes such as political burglary, bribery, extortion, tax fraud, illegal use of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), illegal use of taxpayers' money for private purposes.

when a crucial portion of one tape, which had never been out of the White House custody, was found to have been erased. The White House blamed Rose Mary Woods, Nixon's secretary, who finally admitted to erasing portions of the tape. The issue of access to the tapes went all the way to the Supreme Court and on July 24, 1974 the Court unanimously ruled in United States v. Nixon that Nixon's claim of executive privilege over the tapes was void and they further ordered him to surrender them to special prosecutor Leon Jaworski. On July 30, Nixon complied with the order and released the tapes.
Nixon's position was becoming increasingly precarious, and the House of Representatives began formal investigations into the possible impeachment of the President. The House Judiciary Committee voted to recommend the first article of impeachment against the President: obstruction of justice.
