This question is very difficult to answer, due to the many variables that exist in regard to style, genre, time period and aesthetic considerations. Art, in its simplest terms, is a representation that reflects the artist's subjective reality while at the same time reflecting certain aspects of the natural, real world. The fact is that a work of art, visible and tangible as it is, is a kind of persisting event which was created at a particular time and place by a particular person, even if the exact when, where and by whom is unknown. Though art can be a creation of the past, it continues to exist in the present, long surviving at times its creator.
