A villain is a person or character whom is the cause of despair and heartache for those who surround her. Villains are typically selfish towards themselves and careless towards others. A villain can be hypocritical, persuasive, mischievous, inhumane, and forceful. They can also lack a conscience. Even if they do have one, it is over burdened with their own guilt. The villain in Macbeth is Lady Macbeth, his wife. She is guilty because of the things that she does throughout the play. Lady Macbeth is most responsible for the tragic events in William Shakespeare's play Macbeth because of her forceful nature towards Macbeth, and her increasing guilt, which leads to her insanity.

to know if he is a true man under his clothes. She questions him because of his unwillingness to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth is a villain because she insults Macbeth by calling him a girl. In the next quotation Macbeth is being directed by Lady Macbeth, to be a person in which he is not. "Look like the innocent flower, / but be the serpent under't" (1.6. 73-74). Lady Macbeth wants Macbeth to act innocent but be evil. Although he wants to be king, he doesn’t know if he can kill King Duncan. She wants him to look like a flower which is pretty, perfect, and innocent, but be its dirt, evil and vain roots/serpent, which is something he is not, except for when he goes off to battle. The final example of Lady Macbeth's force is in this gruesome quotation about breast-feeding a child, then cutting its head open:
I have given suck and know
How tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me:
I would, while it was smiling in my face,
Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums
