Why Did Dorian Kill Basil

In this essay I will be exploring the two characters that we meet and the readers impressions of them. This extract is taken from the Novel, ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles’ and describes the introduction of Tess and Alec. I will be taking an analytical approach and going into depth on how Thomas Hardy presents the characters and their relationship.

In the very first paragraph the reader is immediately told of how Tess is of a lover class to Alec. This is shown by the difference in name. Tess carries the name “Durbeyfield” which can be related to a poor, working class family that still lives in memory of “ a very old silver spoon” that stirs her pea soup. On the other hand, Alec ...

stance towards her. It is evident to the reader that Alec is a seducer by the way Tess reacts, “Alec looked at Tess as he spoke, in a way that made her blush a little.” In addition to this, he continually asks her questions, keeping their conversation going and luring her in, “Where do you live? What are you?” Thus showing that Alec is in his element and comfortable.

Alec, feeding Tess strawberries, is symbolic for lust or love. This is because, the idea that a strawberry can be seen as a symbol of love, purely because it is red and heat shaped. This section, can also be interpreted that Alec has Tess where he wants her, eating out the palm of his hand. He is dominant as he “insisted” for her to part her lips to eat the strawberries. It is evident that Alec is above Tess as she accompanied him for a walk through his “fruit- garden and greenhouse... the gentlemen did not wish to be disturbed in this tete-a-tete servantry.”
