There has never been a winner of a presidential election in America who has run as an independent. Rarely, if ever, do third-party candidates ever win even one single electoral college vote. are actually examples in which voting third party is not just a "throw away" vote; however, it actually hurt the political actions of the people voting for third party. This is because the major third party candidate in the 2000 election was Ralph Nader, more of a left leaning person, and the winner of the election was the conservative George Bush. In the hypothetical situation where Trump runs third party, the votes taken away from the Republican party would likely lead to a Democratic victory in the presidential election. With these observations, the question of, "why would anybody vote for a third party candidate" should be reviewed. With this question, two extra caveats should be added to the question, simply because these are topic that have had little research done on, "do mental illnesses affect a person's likelihood of voting for a third party, and are people who have beliefs in conspiracy theories also more likely to vote for a third party candidate?"

Much of the current literature has to do with distrust of the government. A specific example of this is the article authored by Geoff Peterson and J. Mark Wrighton.
