William Blake's London

William Blake is to me one of my favorite poets, besides Edgar Allen Poe. Blake wrote many great poems but one of my favorites is called London. In this poem Blake brings to light the dark times of the England in the 1700’s. The way he does this is by bringing truth, to a town that is run by monarchs, overrun with poverty, and gleaming with hardships. This is portraying the hard working lower class and commoners to the lazy, non-chalant, upper class, church, and the monarchs. William Blake’s London shows the evils of what the church and monarchs done in this era.

next thing that Blake brings to mind in London is the how harsh the economy was and how the monarchs let good and morality fade away so everyone can suffer even more. In the poem Blake talks about “hearing every man’s cry.” (Blake, 841) One may think that they are physically crying, but the cries are actually the pain and suffering that the people are having to endure. To me this means that because of the spreading famine and disease, people were dying and killing each other just for some scrap food that may have been weeks old. Also, to me this means that the cries were pleas to the wealthy and prayers to God to help this horrible time pass and make everything better. This is the imagery of what Blake is trying to place in the peoples heads to help them realize what is happening to them and who is doing it to them.
The third and last thing that I got out of Blake’s London, is how he describes what the economy is like in the city of London. In the first line Blake says, ...
