Windsor Castle is a medieval castle and one of the most famous landmarks in Britain. It was originally built by William the Conqueror during the Norman invasion of the southern part of England, and since then it has been home to royal families from the time of Henry I. The entire castle grounds cover over twenty-six acres of land however most of it is restricted from the public. Windsor castle is strategically placed upon a hill, and is fortified with a massive wall surrounding most of the palace and the small town inside. During the English Civil War, the castle acted as a headquarters for Parliamentary forces, when it suffered heavy damage. The castle was restored, however, by its next inhabitant, Charles II, whose Baroque interior restorations are still admired today (Matthews).
After a period of neglect, the castle was restored by George III and George IV, and many extravagant additions were placed on the castle. The castle is based on Georgian and Victorian design with a few modern Gothic restorations and is considered by many to be "a superb and unrivalled sequence of rooms widely regarded as the finest and most complete expression of later Georgian taste" (Roberts 76). Although criticized for its time consuming upkeep, it remains today one of England's most popular tourist attractions and its rich history gives it a "place among the greatest European palaces" ...
