In scene 5 of act 1 we meet Lady Macbeth. She is reading a letter from Macbeth informing here of the witches prophecies. Upon reading the letter she becomes delighted and says that he will become "what thou art promised." Macbeth in allowing his wife, his "dearest partner in greatness." to know of his deepest secrets shows us that their relationship is very close. So close in fact that Lady Macbeth is aware of his every fault. She knows that he is incapable of "catching the nearest way." to the throne and lacks the "illness"(evil) that accompanies ambition. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth that tonight he must act like "flower" but act like a quote "serpent under't". These small quotes show how scrupulous and cunning Lady Macbeth is. To further persuade him she tells him that if he follows her plan that he will have nothing less then the power of a king. Macbeth being lead by his wife like this gives me the view that Shakespeare wants us to sympathise with the character of Macbeth.
In scene 7 Macbeth after wrestling with his conscience .He confronts his wife and tells that "We will proceed no further in this business". Lady Macbeth becomes angry she attacks him mentally with a barrage of insults in a bid to persuade him. She tells him that she would rather "dash'd the brains" of her own child then break a promise.
