CONDITION

This is used to show that the status quo is problematic. You want to show the reader that there is a problem with the way things are, and that your paper is a solution to that problem.

Here are some examples of the destabilizing condition:

1. Demonstrate that the status quo is contradictory
a. Example: Even those who believe they have free will nevertheless assume that they can find ways of controlling or limiting the behavior of others.
2. Demonstrate that the status quo is controversial
a. Example: Libertarians take it for granted that actions can have moral worth only if they are freely chosen, but this is not necessarily so.
3. Demonstrate that there is an approach in which the status quo does not consider
a. Example: Current philosophers of action pay little or no attention to the recent work of neurobiologists.
4. Demonstrate that the status quo draws one specific conclusion from the evidence, though it could just as well draw another ...
