Wuthering Heights: A Novel Of Revenge



Often people become vengeful when they have been hurt deeply. In Wuthering Heights written by Emily Brontë, Heathcliff is one character who seeks revenge when he is betrayed. Although Heathcliff becomes vengeful in his younger years, it is in his adulthood that he takes revenge against his former torturers. Even his true love is a victim of his revenge.
To begin, Heathcliff is vengeful as a boy and teenager because he was abused by Hindley. Heathcliff was rescued from the streets of Liverpool at the age of seven and then brought to Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff, however, was not welcomed by anyone, especially his foster-brother Hindley, who tortured him every time he got a chance. As ...

So several punishments were given to them such as, “The curate might set as many chapters as he pleased for Catherine to get by heart, and Joseph might thrash Heathcliff till his arm ached; they forgot everything the minute they were together again” (Ch 6, Pg 71). Because Hindley separated Catherine and Heathcliff, Heathcliff sought revenge towards Hindley.

Finally, Heathcliff is abused by Catherine. In a relationship it is easier to get hurt if one of person changes his or her mind, which is exactly what happens when Catherine confesses her thoughts to Nelly and at the same time is overheard by Heathcliff. “I’ve no more business to marry Edgar Linton than I have to be in heaven; and if the wicked man in there had not brought Heathcliff so low, I shouldn’t have thought of it.
