In this section of the novel Catherine is asking Nelly, the main narrator of the story, also a foster sister and servant to the Heights, what she thinks about Mr. Edgar Linton. Mr. Edgar has just asked her to marry him and she has accepted his proposal. Catherine confides in Nelly and explains her distress about the whole situation.
Catherine's tone in this section of the novel is pure outrage. As she is heavily questioned by Nelly, with the use of imagery you see the incredulous look on Catherine's face.
