You Just Don't Understand: The Differences In Men And Women

In her book, You Just Don't Understand, Deborah Tannen makes many
arguments about how men and women act and what they want to hear in
conversation. These examples help the reader grasp Tannen's ideas and
arguments and make the book more interesting and easier to relate to. In
order to support her arguments, Tannen uses many examples that give the
reader an idea of situations that are brought about during conversations

interpretation because
the reader knows nothing about the salesperson except for his profession.

another salesperson to compare her results, therefore, she can not make
assumptions from this situation.
Another interpretation of Tannen's example is that the salesperson
was using his knowledge about the camera to help Tannen. He was innocently
trying to explain to Tannen that her ...

her point of view. Tannen does not
further discuss the relationship the two of them had. The man might have
been reading the newspaper only because he felt comfortable in front of the
woman to do as he pleased. Tannen also does not discuss the previous
relationships of the woman. She may react the same way toward all the men
she dates, therefore, assumptions should not be made based on one situation.

Tannen's interpretation was that the woman was understanding to the
man's needs, and that she was nice enough to put aside her need to talk
about their special evening they shared the night before. Tannen portrays
the woman as the winner because she was aware of Tannen's ideas ...
