In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story “Young Goodman Brown”, the lead character is a young seventeenth-century newlywed puritan man who has a lot of pride. He makes one nighttime journey into the forest that changes his life forever. The path he ventures on takes him from his ordinary life into darkness where evil lurks.
When the story opens Young Goodman Brown is bidding his wife, Faith, farewell since he has an appointment to keep. Faith’s name has a dual meaning, she is physically his wife but she also is his link to faith in God. Faith pleads with Young Goodman Brown to “sleep in your own bed” (Hawthorne, p.641). hair. “She is clearly the more intimate of the two” (42) and this seems to alarm Young Goodman Brown.
As Brown walks into the forest he meets up with a fellow traveler who states he is late since “the clock of the Old South was striking as I came through Boston and that is full fifteen minutes agone.” (Hawthorne, p.642) This is an indication that the fellow traveler is the devil since no mortal man could cover that many miles in such a short time on foot, but the narrator never confirms that the dark figure is the devil. The fellow traveler has a staff that looks like a great black snake. This snake is referring to the snake in the story of Adam and Eve. The snake leads Eve to the tree of life and after eating the fruit from the tree they were banished from the garden. A staff will eventually lead Young Goodman Brown to the witches Sabbath and after witnessing the mass Brown feels isolated from the village.
