A response to the short story “Careful” by Raymond Carver

This was an interesting read. It seemed to me that this whole story was an abstract metaphor of Lloyd’s relationship with his wife Inez or soon to be ex-wife. The idea that he can’t hear and steps taken to cure his ailment certainly has some hidden meaning; I will explain. “Okay… I’m willing to try anything.”
I like the fact the story is written in a lot of descriptive language, to give a more vivid image. If you pay attention to the wording you can pick up possible underlining ideas. “We’ll try this first. If it doesn’t work, we’ll try something else.” When he had his head tilted with the baby oil in his ear, he was holding on to the chair for balance, at the end of the ten minutes “he ...

his life. “Not forever, of course not, I know that. I couldn’t do that.” He doesn’t even seem to want to try to believe in himself. When Inez runs out of the house (at the end of the story) it seems that she is really running away from the way he is; this almost delusional way of being.
Lloyd seems to be living the life of a bum a man who does nothing with his life; sitting around at 11 o’clock feeling empowered because he woke up at 8 to watch the Today show. Like the roof of Lloyd’s apartment his head is also slanted or has a slanted view. “What if he woke up then, unable to hear the ceiling inches from his head?” Lloyd seems to go into his own world and focus on himself or worry about small things (small to him a least) and ignores what is in front of him the way he is living or his wife for instance. It’s a metaphor for what seems to be normal at least for him. Things in his house are out of proportion and it doesn’t bother him in the least. His wife Inez seems to realize this ...
