1831 was an era that swayed the course of our nation. The year began with a solar eclipse, for many an omen of mighty changes. Nat turner rebellion soon followed, then more violent political arguments over slavery and tariffs. Religious revivalism swept the north, and important observers traveled the land, forming the opinions that would shape the worlds view of America for generations to come. New technologies were dramatically changing Americans relationship with the land and Andrew Jackson harsh policies toward the Cherokees erased most Indians last hopes of autonomy. Masur organizes 1831 around the themes that he suggests underlie many of the tumultuous events of the year, slavery, the unresolved tension between states rights and national priorities, the competing passions of religion and politics and the effects of new machinery of more violent arguments over the future of slavery. Masur chose 1831 because he believes it was the turning point for the United States and its development. The title of the book envelops this idea and shows that masur believes the eclipse to be an important aspect of 1831. He explains that during 1831 the people saw the world differently and were moving beyond the fear they had during the last eclipse.
