The eighties were a great time of talented athletes, it was a decade of all sports. The popularity of many sports were increased in this decade, mostly because of television. The Olympics were a big part of the 1980’s. The world records, the Olympic records, the introduction of new sports and women’s sports. Baseball, basketball, football, boxing, and some other sports also had their part in this decade.

The men’s US hockey team also won an unexpected gold medal by defeating the Soviet Union. In 1984 Los Angeles there was yet another boycott starting with the Soviet Union, but only thirteen other countries joined in which was the cause of the loss of some Olympic sports. China competed in the Olympics for the first time in over thirty years and took home their share of medals.
In 1988 the summer games Ben Johnson of Canada defeated Carl Lewis in the 100-meter dash and set a world record. Three days later the IOC announced that Johnson had tested positive for steroids. The IOC states anyone found guilty of using any kind of drug is disqualified and unable to compete in the games. Lewis was awarded the gold medal and was the first man ever to win the 100-meter dash twice, he also won the long jump for the second time.
