Buddhism was founded in India in the 500's BCE. Once introduced into China, many converted overtime. Buddhism was more accepted during the times of political disunity and was resented during political unity.
The documents during the time of disunity (2 and 3) demonstrate that Buddhism was received well. Document 2 explains how if you follow "the way" of Buddhism you in a time of sin you will reach Nirvana. Written by Zhi Dun, a Chinese scholar, it shows that since the government wasn't stable they looked towards Buddhism as a positive way to escape sin. Also written by a scholar, document 3 demonstrates that things other than what Confucius said ...

which isn't fond of foreign ideas. Since Buddhism is foreign, they see it as evil. Document 5 shows the negative attitude through a defensive tone, comparing it to Confucianism and Daoism in that they all promote an orderly society. It is written by a Buddhist scholar who is biased because he likes Buddhism and would like to convince the government that it is not so different from the other religions.
One document that I would need to evaluate the extent of Buddhism in China is a chart that displays converts to Buddhism during the period of disunity through the period of unity. This would show how Buddhism became disliked over time. Another document I would like is from a Buddhist peasant during the unity period to show how Buddhists were treated during this time.
