26 Men And A Girl

“Twenty-Six Men and a Girl” by Maxim Gorky portrays a basic human need to believe in something good. Twenty-six men toil away as slaves in the basement of a bakery, stripped of their humanity. All they know of in life is work and hardship and misery. However their one solace, the one thing that keeps them hanging on to life is their love for Tanya, whom they revere as a goddess in the flesh. The arrival of the soldier tests the stability of the pedestal the men have placed her on, a test which she ultimately fails. As a result the men are devastated, their faith destroyed and they are deprived even of their fantasy. In the end we see a bleak picture of the men worse off than before, robbed ...

bakers, who see themselves as superior to the twenty-six, and by the police, who will not even allow them into the town gardens. Their intensive and monotonous labor has changed them into shells of people, stealing away their health, vitality, and humanity as it has turned them into veritable machines,- “we moved our hands and fingers mechanically during endlessly long hours, till we were so accustomed to our monotonous work that we ceased to pay any attention to it.” The men have worked along side one another so long that they have almost become one consciousness. They no longer speak, as they have said everything there is to say to one another. When they sing, the action begins spontaneously, as if all the men are in tune with each other.
