Freedom to be an individual is essential to the wellbeing of all people. However, this freedom to make one's own decisions, to do as one pleases, moreover, to be one's own person, is often prevented by societal determinism. The restrictions created by this problem of social injustice can manifest themselves in many ways. One such way is through gender roles in society. For example, male dominance often times restricts the female's ability to be her own person. The overbearing power of the dominant character in these situations determines the fate of the "victim" and keeps him or her from developing as an individual. Therefore, through the problems of determinism in society (gender role and hereditary determinism), one is deprived of freedom to be an individual in society.
The problem of hereditary determinism is one that certainly restricts a person from developing as an individual in society. Two characters in the play, Dr. Rank and Nora, demonstrate the lack of freedom one has as a result of hereditary determinism. Dr. Rank, for example, suffers from a physical disease passed on to him from his father. He states, "I'd just as soon laugh at it all.
